Course Description

In this course, Dr. Anju Nohria, cardiologist and subspecialist in advanced heart failure at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, provides a comprehensive update on the diagnosis and management of patients with acute heart failure (HF), with expert insights on the optimal treatments for individual patients.

In her presentation, Dr. Nohria discusses the benefits and complications of vasodilators and inotropes in the treatment of HF, recent data on use of diuretics in HF, and reviews the risks and benefits of pulmonary catheters. In addition, she outlines how to identify patients in need of advanced therapies, including the indications for cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist devices.

This course is intended for primary care and internal medicine physicians and others interested in learning more about recognizing and treating patients with decompensated heart failure.

COURSE DIRECTORS

Dr. Martina M. McGrath, MB, BCh, FASN is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also an associate physician and attending nephrologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. McGrath completed her medical degree, internal medicine residency, and nephrology training in Ireland. She then completed the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Nephrology fellowship program and joined faculty at BWH and HMS in 2012.

Her subspecialty interest is in transplant nephrology, and she is an investigator in basic transplant immunology, based at the Transplantation Research Center, BWH. Her research is focused on targeting T-cell costimulatory pathways in allograft rejection, and developing novel therapies to target these pathways and promote the development of regulatory T cells and allograft tolerance. She also is active in the area of medical education, serving as course director for the combined BWH/HMS Update in Internal Medicine series of courses.
